strike, beat, slay; akin to OFries. sl[=a], D. slaan, OS. &
OHG. slahan, G. schlagen, Icel. sl[=a], Dan. slaae, Sw. sl?,
Goth. slahan; perhaps akin to L. lacerare to tear to pieces,
Gr. ????, E. lacerate. Cf. {Slaughter}, {Sledge} a hammer,
{Sley}.]
