Displaced Person
The author, born in Kiev in 1936, became a displaced person after World War II and, with her mother, emigrated to Mississippi to escape the consequences of the war, which they had spent in a refugee camp. The family`s survival depended upon a series of lies and half truths, which young Ella had to come to terms with as she also assimilated life in a new country--a country that itself didn`t match up with the lies she had been told about it in the movies of the time.
