A mixed-race young woman passes for white in New York, where she has come after journalism school to work for a magazine. Put off by her live-in boyfriend`s casual racism, she leaves him and moves to a Brooklyn sublet--and into the orbit of a disturbing woman named Greta, who is also of mixed race, and who becomes obsessed with the heroine, spying on her and trying to interfere in her life, until her madness culminates in a final climactic scene.
