  1. \Ex*sert"\, Exserted \Ex*sert"ed\, a. [L. exsertus, p. p.
    of exserere to stretch out or forth. See {Exert}.]
    Standing out; projecting beyond some other part; as, exsert
    stamens.
          A small portion of the basal edge of the shell
