Lottie Gardner`s mother has died, and Lottie goes home to Cambridge to get the house ready to sell. She takes her 17-year-old son from her first marriage along and the two of them take a break from Lottie`s new marriage. While in Cambridge, Lottie (a magazine writer) observes her brother still in the throes of obsession over the girl/now woman-next-door, the death of an au pair named Jessica, and the various permutations of love.
