Men in the village collect the local clay and volcanic sand, while the women shape and mold the pieces by hand using only the most rudimentary of tools, sticks, and paddles. The pieces are low fired in open rice hull and coconut husk fires and then embellished with palm oil and tamarind for a classic wood-like finish. According to legend, the Goddess Deui Anjani taught the indigenous people of Lombak Island the secrets involved in turning earth and clay into vessels.
