- An infectious disease characterized by catarrh of the respiratory tract and peculiar paroxysms of coughing, ending in a prolonged crowing or whooping respiration. It is caused by the bacterium Bordetella pertussis.
- Pertussis is a highly communicable disease caused by an infection of the upper respiratory tract by the bacteria Bordetella pertussis. The principal clinical picture is severe coughing and fever. Active immunization against Pertussis is being promoted by many public health authorities.
