Tree of Heaven
Set in 1938 during the Japanese occupation of Nanking, this novel depicts the relationship between a junior officer, whose assignment is to watch over a garrison town, and a starving, filthy Chinese woman who is assaulted by his soldiers. When he rescues her, she becomes his servant, and a strange and powerful intimacy ensues.
