Joseph Pugh takes time off from teaching at Oxford to live in a wild farm valley in Wales. When he falls ill, he is cared for by Bronwen, the wife of a sadistic and violent neighboring farmer. Joseph and Bronwen fall in love, and the visit of a famous preacher sets in motion events that lead to a violent conclusion. This is the first novel by Patrick O`Brian.
