- Inspection of the lower colon using a thin, lighted tube called a sigmoidoscope. Samples of tissue or cells may be collected for examination under a microscope. Also called proctosigmoidoscopy.
- Sigmoidoscopy is a procedure whereby a doctor inserts a viewing tube (sigmoidoscope) into the rectum for the purpose of inspecting the lower colon (sigmoid colon) and rectum. If an abnormal area is detected, a biopsy can be performed.
