Biology Dictionary

Definition: Orthostatic hypotension is a drop of the systolic blood pressure of more than 20 mmHg immediately upon changing the position from supine to standing. It is a result of either hypovolemia or the loss of vascular tone of the lower extremities. This is a common finding in the elderly. Among random sampling of the elderly, about 15% would demonstrate postural hypotension.
