- Kidney failure is the decrease in the glomerular filtration rate. The most often used laboratory test is serum creatinine (normal 50 to 100 umol/L). If a subject is totally without kidney function, serum creatinine rises by about 80 to 120 umol/L per day.
- Renal failure is the decrease in kidney function which is often reflected clinically by the elevation of serum urea nitrogen and creatinine concentrations.
Types: - pre-renal: acute tubular necrosis
- renal: proliferative and crescentic glomerulonephritis, acute pyelonephritis, malignant nephrosclerosis
- post-renal: obstruction of the urinary tract
