Focusing
Why does therapy succeed for some patients and not for others? Eugene T. Gendlin addresses that question, and raises many others, in his classic book FOCUSING. Released in 1980, FOCUSING continues to have far-reaching impact on psychoanalysis and other therapeutic methods, searching out the sub-conscious response to contemporary psychotherapy. According to Gendlin, certain people have intuitive abilities that make applying the principles of psychotherapy easy. Others simply have a harder time acclimating themselves to their new thoughts. Using a subtle version of kinesiology, Gendlin has developed a series of Focusing Steps which contain a built-in test: when performed correctly, each step will build towards a growing physical release. This is the body actually letting go of the offending behavior or mindset. The readers learn how to recognize this feeling and become sensitive to their own unconscious desires and fears. FOCUSING seeks to define and teach positive habits to readers seeking physical and emotional healing, either through traditional psychotherapy or through their own study. Dozens of anecdotes and real-life situations are used to illuminate Gendlin`s theories and help the reader begin applying his technique immediately.
