Tom Paine
The son of an English corsetmaker, pamphleteer, and political radical Tom Paine (1737-1809) came to America in 1774. Famous for his activities on behalf of the colonies during the American Revolution and in France during the French Revolution, he consistently urged revolt and independence. Paine led a turbulent life. He made powerful enemies in the United States, was tried for treason in England, and was imprisoned in France during the Reign of Terror. Despite being denounced an extremist and a drunkard, Paine became regarded after his death as an American patriot and an important crusader for democratic rights. His influential writings -- including Common Sense, The American Crisis, The Rights Of Man, and The Age Of Reason -- have shaped democratic movements worldwide.
