& vb. n. {Belaying}.] [For senses 1 & 2, D. beleggen to
cover, belay; akin to E. pref. be-, and lay to place: for
sense 3, OE. beleggen, AS. belecgan. See pref. {Be-}, and
{Lay} to place.]
