Many believe public education to be ineffective, anachronistic, and unbelievably expensive. Taxpayers complain that schools have stagnated, lost their mission, and produce continually diminishing returns. But American education has evolved with the country itself, and its sacred cow status perennially resists the harshest scrutiny. Until the advent of the information age, the problems in public schools were adequately concealed.
