An unhappily married middle-aged schoolteacher falls in love with a younger woman and resolves to run off with her and change his life. In the end, his resolve crumbles, however, and he chooses duty over love in a novel that views his behavior ambiguously: Has the hero been cowardly and weak, or noble and brave?
